Bronze statues - Ficarra

At the entrance to the small town of Ficarra, there is a sculpture depicting a German soldier who was dead and half-buried in the ground. This work, created by the sculptor Mario Valenti, recalls a fact that occurred in 1943 when the Americans landed in Brolo and that inspired Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, who was staying in Ficarra at the time, writing parts of his famous novel The Leopard . The story goes that during the events of 1943, a German soldier was mortally wounded, and still dying was badly buried at the foot of an old olive tree.
