Lauro cave

La Grotta del Lauro is located at the foot of the mighty dolomitic limestone massif of the Rocca del Crasto, at 1068 meters above sea level. It is a real natural wonder not only for the territory of Alcara, but for the whole Nebrodi area: it is the largest and most articulated among the karst cavities not only of the western side of the Rocche del Crasto, but of the whole Valdemone. The path to reach it is very tortuous and for one part runs along the vertical fault of the Rocca Calanna and then climbs the Crasto massif where the opening is located. The interior, full of rooms and tunnels, is a real path that goes towards the bowels of the earth, dotted with large stalactites and stalagmites that take on the most particular forms. Important archaeological and zoological discoveries have also been made in the cave.
