Church of Carmine - Raccuja

The Chiesa del Carmine, located in the upper part of the town near the Branciforti Castle, was once annexed to the Convent of the Shod Carmelites, closed in 1866 and no longer exists today. Its origins date back to 1604, but today's appearance is the result of an expansion of the nineteenth century, as evidenced by the Carmelite coat of arms dated 1855 and placed on the local sandstone portal. The interior of the cult building has a single nave and is now accessible only thanks to a recent restoration that has taken it away from ruin and abandonment. Of the wooden high altar, in the past decorated with Solomonic columns, today only a few fragments remain. The sculpted group in gilded wood of the Madonna del Carmelo with San Simone Stock dated 1726 and the equally eighteenth-century sculpture depicting the Madonna del Tindari, placed on a side altar, are still visible.
