Monastery of San Nicolò del Fico

The Monastery of San Nicolò del Fico, whose foundation dates back to the Byzantine era, is probably the oldest religious building in the village of Raccuja. News of this convent building has reached us since 1091 when the Grand Count Roger restored its functions after the long period of abandonment of the Arab domination. The Church, externally, is characterized by the simple facade culminating in the bell tower placed at the top. The interior, with a single nave, is embellished with a triumphal arch carved in the local sandstone. It contains two works of art: the 17th century canvas by an unknown author depicting San Basilio invoking the Virgin and a papier-mâché sculpture depicting San Nicolò di Bari dating back to the 18th century.
