Church of San Cono - Naso

The Church of San Cono, an authentic Sicilian jewel of the sixteenth century, is dedicated to the patron of Naso and was erected in correspondence with the cave of San Michele, where the Saint spent the last period of his earthly life. The Church is characterized by the presence of stone arches supported by Doric columns and capitals, while the portal is richly decorated with vine branches and floral elements. Inside, 17th-century paintings embellish the furnishings, such as the canvas depicting the Madonna della Mercede attributed to Francesco Napoli. The mortal remains of San Cono are kept in the splendid Baroque crypt. Finely decorated marbles are topped with paintings depicting the numerous wonders attributed to the patron of Naso. The church was destroyed by a terrible fire on January 25, 1920 and immediately rebuilt at the behest of the citizens. The bell tower of the 15th century is the only original structure left in the building.
