Sanctuary of San Calogero

This place of worship was built in the early twentieth century in place of a previous church that no longer exists. Originally it was thought to build a sanctuary with a Latin cross plan much larger than the current one but later, due to space problems, it was decided to close the first apse arm. The exterior is very simple and essential and does not denote valuable architectural elements except for the pilasters on the facade that frame the linear arched portal. The interior, with a single wide nave, houses statues and paintings from the beginning of the twentieth century, with the exception of an eighteenth-century Immaculate Conception. The high altar houses the rich wooden case that enthrones the sixteenth-century statue of San Calogero in an elevated position which, several times a year, is descended, using a sophisticated mechanical system, to be carried in procession.
