Mother Church Santa Maria Assunta - Galati Mamertino

The Mother Church of Galati Mamertino, dedicated to the Madonna Assunta, was built in 1575 by the will of the Lanza family. The building, in Renaissance style, is composed of three naves delimited by 12 Doric columns made of pietra serena, typical of the Nebrodi mountains. Inside you can admire works of exquisite beauty including the marble statues of the Trinity and the Annunciation by Antonello Gagini, a great Sicilian sculptor of the 1500s, paintings by Mercury and Tresca, the wooden statue of San Sebastiano of Flemish manufacture and a canvas depicting the Martyrdom of Sant'Agata by Pietro Novelli, called the Monrealese. Under the presbytery there is a small rectangular crypt with twelve vertical niches and ten wooden funeral boxes positioned on metal shelves.
