Church of San Teodoro - San Marco d'Alunzio

16th century Greek cross church, also known as Badia Piccola, the Church of San Teodoro was built on the remains of a Byzantine chapel. In the seventeenth century the interior was decorated with serpottian-style stuccos depicting scenes from the New and Old Testaments: Judith and Holofernes and The fall of the manna in the desert, on the sides of the altar, scenes from the Parable of the prodigal son with Saints and the four Theological Virtues to the pillars that support the vault. The Church also houses a precious gilded wooden ciborium with an 18th century silver tabernacle on the main altar, and some valuable paintings including the martyrdom of San Teodoro. Adjacent to the church is the Monastery of the Benedictine Nuns, dating back to 1545, now used as a Museum of Byzantine and Norman Culture and Figurative Arts.
