Church of Madonna Annunziata - San Marco d'Alunzio

At the beginning of the town of San Marco d’Alunzio, almost to guard the town, stands the small Church of the Madonna Annunziata, probably erected in the XII on the remains of an ancient pagan temple. With a single nave, the church has undergone several transformations over the centuries as demonstrated by Byzantine frescoes found under the plaster of the walls. Inside you can admire a statue of the Madonna in Carrara marble of the fifteenth century, from the Gaginian school: on its pedestal, in bas-relief, a medieval city is depicted, the hands and head of the Virgin, destroyed during a Saracen raid, were rebuilt in plaster.
